Our Story

Our Heritage

In 1865, the 9,000-acre Rancho El Tinieblo was founded in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The name, which means “the absence of light,” comes from the heavy fog that shrouds the ranch every morning. It was also the name given to the mezcal produced from the ranch’s wild agave.

Our Family

After lying dormant for decades, the Peréz-Salinas family revived the Rancho El Tinieblo in 1986. When we discovered the original stone wheel used for crushing agave, we were inspired to use our own ancestral recipe to restore the ranch’s legacy of producing single-origin, hand-distilled, and sustainably harvested mezcal.

Our Land

Today, Rancho El Tinieblo operates much in the same way it did back in 1865. We raise cattle, tend our orange trees, produce artisanal mezcal, and help conserve local the populations of rattlesnakes, whitetail Miquihuanense deer, wild pigs, and rabbits. We’ve also used the ranch’s unique landscape to create a haven for exotic animals, including zebras, wildebeest, water buffalo, watusi, oryx, elan, blackbuck, and red and axis deer.

OUR LEGACY

El Tinieblo has grown into an established mezcal brand that brings our family immense pride. It has also allowed us to play an integral role in the conservation and regulation of the local agave harvest. With our roots firmly planted in traditional culture and sustainable farming methods, our family-owned brand works to boost the local economy, care for our land and wildlife, and honor the Mexican tradition of artisanal mezcal.
